Abstract Information: We are often asked to disaggregate data based on race/ethnicity. However, there may be limited understanding about the intersectionality of a person’s identity. We often resort to the standard criteria of black/African American, Latino/Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander/Hawaiian, and the catch all category of “Multi-racial”. A new study, published in the Journal of STEM Outreach, examines effective approaches for measuring key demographic variables and offers recommendations for inclusive demographic data practices across student-serving programs. This study aligned researchers and STEM practitioners across Oregon Health & Science University, Portland State University and the Portland Metro STEM Partnership.
