276 - Report on updated dataset of the Technology Stage transition in government-funded R&D activities based on Long-term follow-up questionnaire survey of NEDO.

Abstract Information: NEDO is a funding agency in Japan on national research and development, which works with the Japanese government for implementation of economic and industrial policies. Since its establishment in 1980, the evaluation framework on various type of R&D projects has been repeatedly revised and established as a method of our project management. Currently, the framework consisting of ex-ante evaluation, mid-term, terminal, and follow-up evaluation is applied to our long-term government-funded R&D projects. In the follow-up evaluation, we have conducted a variety of surveys, such as investigation of success factors through interviews and monitoring activity via questionnaires (up to 6 years of monitoring) for the project participants since 2004. The dataset accumulated from 2004 have been reported regularly and recently played an important role to design and monitor long-term R&D projects for green transformation in Japan .
In our monitoring activity based on questionnaires for each project participant after 1-, 2-, 4- and 6-years of project termination, we have been analyzing results of the survey on technology phase dividing into five-stage (“Terminated”, “Fundamental/elemental research”, “Technology development”, “Practical application” and “Commercialized”). Isshiki et al. (2018) summarized the transition from R&D to Commercialization in NEDO-related projects and reported that 25% of the project participants reached a stage in “Practical application” or “Commercialized phase”. Kunugi et al. (2020) further discussed that the trend of technology stage transition has a difference between energy/environment and other industrial technology (e.g., IoT and robotics) sector.
In this presentation, we will summarize an overview of technology stage transition using our updated datasets and compile the behaviors of technology phase transition from first-year questionnaires in each year through 2023. We will also report on the difference in the trend of technology stage transition between before and after covid-19, reflecting on the related open-ended answers from project participants.
