290 - Recruiting, Training, and Mentoring New Evaluators of a Clinical and Translational Science Endeavor

Abstract Information: Training the next generation of Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) evaluators requires considerable time, effort, and planning. With the needs to evaluate interdisciplinary CTSA institutions/units/components specialized in diverse areas with varying objectives, the evaluation of CTSAs is a complex task that requires new evaluators to be hired and trained. Training a new evaluator for this endeavor involves increasing trainees’ capacity in clinical and translational sciences, evaluation methods, complex data system and analysis, and visualization techniques. However, once the new evaluators acquire the essential competencies, they may facilitate the evaluation process and distill new perspectives to address our challenges. In this poster, we will share the essential skills and characteristics that we seek in identifying new CTSA evaluators, along with our procedures for recruiting and training new evaluators to participate in this project. We will then discuss facilitators, challenges, strategies for overcoming them, and lessons learned. This poster will benefit clinical and translational research program leaders, evaluation professionals, and anyone interested in training and mentoring the new evaluators for complex interdisciplinary projects, and may prompt translational science program leaders to create new plans for effectively recruiting and training new evaluators.
