Multiplying the transformative power of evaluation: Lessons from UNFPA experience on meaningfully engaging young people in evaluation

Abstract Information: In today's evaluation practice, the need for diverse voices, particularly those of young people, has never been more urgent. This urgency stems from a growing recognition that traditional evaluation approaches often fall short in capturing the varied and layered experiences and perspectives of marginalized groups, in particular, young people. Including youth voices goes beyond ensuring representation; it requires fundamentally reshaping the way we conceptualize and conduct our evaluations to be more inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the intersectional needs and experiences of young people, in all their diversity. Young people bring unique insights and fresh perspectives that can challenge assumptions, uncover blind spots, and ultimately lead to evaluations that are more relevant and impactful. In an era marked by rapid social, technological, and environmental change, the inclusion of youth voices is not just a matter of social equity, but a strategic imperative to foster innovation, resilience, and social change. This diverse, intergenerational panel will delve into the ways in which amplifying and empowering the voices of young people in evaluation can drive transformative change. Drawing from the pioneering work of UNFPA, this panel will explore lessons around the meaningful engagement of young people in evaluation processes, including from the lens of young people themselves. Participants will gain insights into the innovative approaches used by UNFPA to engage young people in evaluation, as well as strategies for overcoming challenges and barriers to inclusion. This panel will also discuss the broader implications of empowerment in evaluation for social change and sustainable development. Specifically, this panel will discuss the following questions: • What role do young people play in shaping and driving evaluation processes that affect them? • How can evaluation processes be made more inclusive and accessible to ensure that the voices of youth are heard and valued? • How can the empowerment of young people in evaluation contribute to innovation, social change, and sustainable development?
