Location: Exhibit Hall A
Abstract Information: This Birds of a Feather Session will explore the labyrinth of race within the landscape of behavioral health programs, particularly those addressing addiction and recovery. Adopting a postmodern framework, we challenge conventional notions of race as a static category, recognizing its fluidity and entanglement with shifting socio-political currents.
At the heart of our exploration lies the recognition of race as a construct both socially constructed and politically assigned, its contours molded by the whims of power and ideology. Through the kaleidoscope of census categories, we witness the ever-evolving nature of racial identity, shaped by the tapestry of historical narratives and contemporary power dynamics.
Yet, as we peel back the layers of racial disparities in mental health diagnostic incidence and recovery treatment outcomes, we confront the enigma of the "race effect" in program evaluation. Are we, as evaluators, able to determine if the categories of race are in fact an accurate description of cultural and behavioral patterns, or are we furthering the symptom of systemic inequities woven into the fabric of American society? Have we become unable to navigate the intricate dance between immutable traits and contextual influences?
In embracing a postmodern sensibility, we can begin to transcend reductionist frameworks, acknowledging race as but one thread in the rich tapestry of social inequality. Are there more effective ways to recenter program evaluation in mental health and in addiction and recovery that account for the complexities of socioeconomic status (SES), migration history, and the intricate web of intersecting identities and experiences that shape health outcomes? Through nuanced program evaluations, we may be able to illuminate the interplay of race, SES, and immigrant status, weaving a more holistic understanding of health disparities and thinking differently about how to support our mental health programming.
In our pursuit of knowledge, shared curiosity, and open-minded inquiry, this session will be designed to embrace uncertainty and complexity, recognizing that truth is not a fixed point but a kaleidoscope of perspectives. As we navigate the terrain of behavioral health programs, we invite dialogue and collaboration, inviting diverse voices to enrich our collective understanding that can ideally chart new pathways towards equity and healing in addiction and recovery support.
