Stream: International Evaluation, Diversity, and Specific Populations

Location: Exhibit Hall A
Abstract Information: Addiction, including alcoholism, is one of the most prominent diseases affecting adults in the United States. If you’re reading this abstract in the presence of others, look around – it’s likely that someone, or even several people, are dealing with addiction in some way. Program evaluators frequently encounter addiction in their work, even if they do not realize it.
Twelve-step programs are among the most effective and well-known interventions and support systems for individuals and families impacted by addiction (Kelly, Humphreys, and Ferri, 2020). This "birds of a feather" session will loosely mirror a 12-step meeting. We will begin with a brief meditation led by the organizer. We will then read the 12 steps and 12 traditions of program evaluation, adapted from the twelve steps and twelve traditions that guide common twelve-step programs. These adaptations should be relatable to all program evaluators, but those familiar with twelve-step programs may particularly appreciate how the “12 steps” and “12 traditions” apply to life and work beyond program evaluation. The organizer will share a brief overview of their experiences before and after becoming a program evaluator. Audience members will be invited to share their experiences, thoughts, feelings, or other responses, with each share limited to 3 minutes. Please come with an open mind, ready to share voluntarily or if called upon.
