Birds of a Feather
Health Evaluation
During recent years, the evaluation community has lifted the importance of incorporating equity in practice. Simultaneously, many organizations have prioritized initiatives that demonstrate their commitment to improving diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging (DEIAB) for their employees and throughout their work. In collaboration with program staff, evaluators play a crucial role in supporting and implementing organizational commitments to DEIAB. This is done by creating frameworks, assessing extent to which goals are met and activities are implemented, and demonstrating progress toward desired outcomes. To do this effectively, we as evaluators need to integrate DEIAB into our work at all stages. This starts with taking steps to recognize our own unconscious and conscious biases that influence our evaluation work. By critically examining whose voices we choose to lift and engage with, evaluators can ensure that diverse perspectives are infused into our work. This will propel all of us toward the positive outcomes we are working to achieve in environments where DEIAB is a priority and where it is not.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Workforce Development (DWD) is focused on developing a diverse, flexible, and highly trained public health workforce. As evaluators in DWD, our purpose for this roundtable is to facilitate active discussion on integration of DEIAB into evaluation activities and practice. Specifically, we will describe our inclusive, collaborative approach to engaging and lifting voices while incorporating DEIAB principles into evaluation planning and design, data collection and analysis, and reporting. We invite participants to contribute examples from their own practice and reflect on challenges and successes achieving this goal. Together, we will come away with fresh insights and considerations for how our day-to-day evaluation practice can and should continue to lift diverse perspectives.
