1042 - PARADISE BY THE DASHBOARD LIGHT: A Crash Course in Power BI

Abstract Information: Curious about Microsoft's Power BI data dashboard software but not sure how to learn it easily and use it with your evaluation data? Power BI is extremely powerful, but can be difficult to learn when you’re first starting out. This workshop takes you from complete novice to complete confidence in knowing how to turn data into a dashboard - connecting to data, cleaning data (when needed), making charts and visuals, and making a dashboard that immediately answers the questions your report audience have about the data. This workshop is 100% hands-on! We'll all make a simple (and beautiful) dashboard with some evaluation survey data together. Participants MUST have a laptop with a recent version of Power BI Desktop installed. Power BI is a Windows only program. It can be downloaded for free from https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/desktop/ or the Microsoft Store .. Relevance Statement: This workshop is a very hands-on workshop where participants will learn how to use Microsoft's Power BI to build an evaluation data dashboard. It is designed for anyone new to Power BI, regardless of their evaluation experience, and teaches how to not only use the software using a sample of evaluation survey data, but how to apply design principles to create effective and engaging dashboards for stakeholders. This workshop increases evaluator knowledge around effectively communicating evaluation data and results in versatile and dynamic ways. Effective reporting promotes and supports transparency and active sharing of data and findings coupled with the goal of equitable access to information in forms that respect individuals and communities of all cultures and honor commitments to confidentiality.
