Evaluating the Impact of the Diamond Educational Excellence Partnership (DEEP) Program on Literacy Outcomes in Southeastern San Diego

Abstract Information: Situated within the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, the Diamond Educational Excellence Partnership (DEEP) is a collaborative endeavor addressing educational challenges in southeastern San Diego. With a specific focus on advancing literacy outcomes, DEEP employs a theory of change that targets caregivers, schools, and extended learning opportunities to enrich early childhood experiences and enhance reading proficiency by third grade. The primary objective of DEEP is to expedite literacy achievement for children affected by learning setbacks related to the COVID-19 pandemic, utilizing a Science of Reading (SOR) model. This presentation centers on the impact evaluation of DEEP, spearheaded by the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE), encompassing a blend of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. SDCOE undertook a comprehensive approach, gathering literacy achievement data, scrutinizing program documents, including administrative and instructional materials, conducting classroom observations, teacher interviews, and deploying teacher surveys. The presentation will disseminate findings from a multilevel analysis, delving into the impact of DEEP programming on student academic, behavioral, and socio-emotional outcomes. Furthermore, it will offer recommendations and insights for schools and districts contemplating the implementation of a Science of Reading approach to literacy.
