Abstract Information: In this presentation I will share how I started as an undergrad with a passion for theoretical research and, through my mentors, work experiences, and real-world application of my skills, have become a graduate student in Measurement and Statistics with a vision of how I can make a difference in underserved communities. This presentation navigates the transformative journey from theoretical research methods to the impactful realm of program evaluation. It highlights the essential role of evaluation in connecting research with practical outcomes to shape programs and policies, offering a unique perspective on transitioning from academic exploration to applying evaluation in diverse, real-world scenarios. My journey has been significantly supported by mentors, professional networks, and continuous learning opportunities such as conferences and workshops. These platforms have not only provided insights into effective evaluation practices but also opportunities for presenting work and engaging with a community committed to truth and impact. The encouragement to pursue publication and presentation avenues has been instrumental in understanding the broader implications of our work, highlighting the collective effort to advance the field. Navigating political and ethical complexities that emerge when findings reveal sensitive or controversial truths has shown to be a significant challenge throughout my journey. This experience taught me the importance of managing these sensitivities, ensuring that the integrity of the data and the objective to drive meaningful change are preserved. I learned that it is important for evaluators to communicate transparent and accurate findings, even when they may provoke discomfort. These endeavors have highlighted the critical role of evaluators in not just gathering data, but in crafting narratives that can bridge the gap between evidence and action. Through my experiences, I’ve recognized the unique position of evaluators in balancing the worlds of data and human impact. The realization that evaluation is not just about data collection but about understanding and advocating for the needs of the community has been a guiding insight. This perspective is essential for evaluations that aspire to not only be accurate, but also transformative. My presentation aims to share these insights from my journey, offering a reflective and forward-looking perspective on program evaluation. It is a call to embrace the challenges and opportunities in our field, with the ultimate goal of driving impactful and sustainable change.
