Michael A. Harnar, Ph.D., is a social scientist, evaluator, and teacher with over 20 years of experience in evaluation. He embodies a unique blend of practical evaluation expertise, research, project and program management, institutional administration, teaching, and curriculum development. Harnar is an expert evaluation methodologist and recognized generalist who has designed and implemented evaluations across various domains as a sole practitioner, team member, and leader.
Harnar is currently an Assistant Professor and Director of the Interdisciplinary PhD in Evaluation program at Western Michigan University, where he teaches courses on qualitative methods, evaluation foundations, and social impact evaluation. He also serves as the Co-Executive Editor of the Journal of MultiDisciplinary Evaluation, an internationally recognized open-access peer-reviewed journal.
In addition to his academic roles, Harnar owns Pointed Arrows Consulting, a veteran-owned small business providing evaluation consulting services. His recent projects include developing an evaluation framework for new technologies for the U.S. Department of Transportation, conducting systematic reviews, and performing metaevaluations for organizations like the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance and Médecins Sans Frontières.
Harnar's expertise has been recognized through awards such as the Western Michigan University Excellence in Discovery Award and the American Evaluation Association's Outstanding Evaluation Award. He holds a Ph.D. in Evaluation and Applied Research Methods from Claremont Graduate University.
