Prof. Hutchins has developed computational approaches of knowledge flow and scientific influence, as well as conducted quantitative analyses of the organization of the research enterprise and scientific workforce. These have been used at federal funding agencies for scientific portfolio analysis, policymaking, strategic planning, and research assessment. Funding agency leadership has used Prof. Hutchins' work in budget justifications and at Congressional appropriations meetings to justify increased federal support for biomedical research. He draws on his experience as a bench neuroscientist to inform his current work on the biomedical research enterprise.
