Carrie Furrer, PhD is a Research Associate Professor at the Center for Improvement of Child & Family Services at Portland State University in Oregon. She has spent the past 25 years working alongside youth and their families in the role of counselor, researcher, and evaluator. Dr. Furrer's research and evaluation work centers on how environments can be developmentally supportive for youth and families, particularly those who are marginalized by systems. She has designed and conducted evaluations related to family support programs, substance use disorder treatment & prevention, early childhood education, child welfare, family drug courts, home visiting, peer mentoring, post-secondary education access, out-of-school time, and youth development. In her work Dr. Furrer strives to integrate systems science, equitable evaluation, and participatory design principles. Dr. Furrer's work has contributed to instructional, practice, and policy shifts that center belonging and engagement in social service and education systems.
