Brian Yates is a tenured Professor at American University, Washington DC. His primary work focuses on expand the methods of cost-inclusive evaluation to delivering the most effective human services, broadly defined, to the most people in need of those services, for the least amount of societal and monetary resources necessary. He began this work while in graduate school in the Department of Psychology at Stanford University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1976.
Most of Dr. Yates' 105 publications (including 6 books), and most of his research and evaluation work, applies cost-effectiveness, cost-benefit, or cost-utility analysis to formative evaluation of human services, such as youth mentoring and parenting training initiatives, residential programs for youth experiencing crises, prevention and treatment of substance abuse, computer-based cognitive-behavioral therapy for alcohol abuse, suicide prevention, and treatments for obesity, depression, and seasonal affective disorder.
Dr. Yates continues this endeavor as a member of research teams at University at Albany (SUNY), a local healthcare system,and an international emergency assistance program for LGBTQI+ individuals and organizations, religious entities, and advocates for human rights.
Dr. Yates also teaches asynchronous online courses in self-management, personality theories, and health psychology, having also created and taught courses in community psychology, behavioral medicine, advanced theories of personality, research methods, and program evaluation.
