Amanda McWhorter, DrPH, MPH serves as Associate Director for Science in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Division of State and Local Readiness. Her professional interests include researching, teaching, and empowering teams to use evaluation data to improve programs. Her experience spans evaluation, readiness and response, behavioral science, and policy and communications. Since joining CDC in 2006, Dr. McWhorter has served in leadership roles in emergency responses to health threats including COVID-19, the opioid epidemic, Zika, Ebola, anthrax, cholera, polio, H1N1, and in disease prevention among globally mobile populations. She helped drive the development of the inaugural National Health Security Preparedness Index and co-conducted pandemic influenza preparedness workshops in Guatemala, Indonesia, Peru, and Trinidad. Early in her career, she gained experience in local public health, non-profit organizations, and academia. She earned a Doctorate in Public Health from the University of Illinois, and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Michigan. She hails from the Midwest and loves public radio and making pottery.
