Evaluating the Unseen: Unveiling Critical Insights for Combatting Human Trafficking

Abstract Information: Evaluation serves as a cornerstone in organizational operations, fulfilling both accountability functions and providing insights into the attainment of objectives (Dyke, 2017). It also serves as a mechanism to identify areas for improvement within plans or programs (Kariuki, 2014). However, in the realm of combatting human trafficking, robust evaluation is notably lacking (Green, 2015; USAID, 2012). This gap is particularly critical given the complexity of addressing human trafficking and the vulnerable populations involved, who have endured extensive trauma.

Drawing upon our ongoing research and intervention programs aimed at significantly and measurably reducing human trafficking in West Africa, this abstract delves into our use of process evaluation. Throughout our project duration, process evaluation served as a vital tool for identifying gaps in services for trafficking survivors and driving continuous improvement in anti-trafficking intervention programs. Notably, one significant gap identified through process evaluation was insufficient trauma-informed care within prevention, protection, and prosecution programs targeting human trafficking. This critical need prompted collaborative efforts with multiple stakeholders to integrate trauma-informed care across all anti-trafficking initiatives, including legal services and prosecution processes.

During the ignite session, we will highlight the transformative impact of process evaluation in our anti-human trafficking efforts in West Africa, particularly in enhancing processes and care for trafficking survivors. Our presentation will showcase how process evaluation has influenced trauma-informed prosecutions, illustrated through the implementation of mock trials with law enforcement and judiciary systems in West Africa. Additionally, we will underscore the lasting impact of evaluation on program sustainability and community awareness, achieved through targeted trainings and technical capacity building for diverse stakeholders engaged in combating human trafficking.
