Location: E144
Abstract Information: Evaluation courses involve exciting new content but can evoke anxiety and stress for new evaluators, especially if there is a statistical component. Playful pedagogy is a non-traditional mode of adult education that harnesses the power of play for deeper, more memorable learning (Forbes, 2021). Play is inherent to humans of all ages and creates positive outcomes yet is often excluded from adult learning (James & Nerantzi, 2019). However, when play is harness for learning, a powerful learning process ensues (Brown, 2009). Play reduces students' barriers to learning (e.g., stress and fear) promoting well-being, joy, and motivation to learn which then enhances the learning outcomes (Forbes, 2021; James & Nerantzi, 2019). Play produces novelty, excitement, and surprise which evoke important neurotransmitters needed for learning (Wang & Aamodt, 2012). Play has a way of awakening student engagement, establishing connection and trust, and encouraging both risk-taking and creativity (Brown, 2009; James & Nerantzi, 2019). Playful pedagogy is not just about fun and games; it is a teaching philosophy and a belief in the power of play to promote a quality learning environment (Brown, 2009; Forbes, 2021). Join us in this session to explore how playful pedagogy can enhance your courses. We will demonstrate specific techniques including the use of games such as I Spy, Guess Who, Would You Rather, 2 Truths and a Lie, and Taboo to teach concepts of interviewing, observing, choosing methodologies, reliability and validity, interpreting client needs, and more. Bring your colleagues and expect to play in this session!
