3 - Bringing Student Voice into the Assessment of Intentional Social Emotional Learning and Culturally Responsive Practices in Arts Instruction

Abstract Information: In this poster session, we display how three projects, each funded by US Department of Education Assistance for Arts Education (AAE) grants, are incorporating student voice to inform the intentional integration of SEL and culturally responsive practices into arts instruction. These projects use student surveys, exit tickets, and analysis of student work products to gather data to inform arts educators’ action research, which subsequently informs the revision of their instruction to ensure that it meets the students’ needs and interests. The projects recognize the inherent potential for educators to address SEL and culturally responsive education through the arts, while providing a keen focus on intentionality and data-driven actions. Using student voice to guide this work can serve to both empower students and elevate the power of arts in schools.
